I've learned since then that's not factual at all. I remember seeing some of the original footage featured in the vintage documentary From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga, where Lucas explained his initial intentions for including that scene and using a stop motion puppet to place over the stand-in actor, but budget restrictions prevented it.

I remember watching a '70s era movie with Streep in it and thinking it was like watching a live play on a stage because the clarity was so off-putting.One of the most talked about scenes for the entire trilogy, and one of the only ones to use real archival footage, this scene features Han Solo interacting with Jabba and making arrangements for more time to repay his debt. There have been movies from that era than when viewed in Hi-Def take you completely out of the experience because the clarity shoves the movie sets/props in your face. Poetic justice would be if a fan restored version of the original film resided there instead of the film makers. I read somewhere that even though the film has been inducted into the Library of Congress there is no actual print of the film there because Lucas wants his hacked up version to be the one. The guys at Team Negative 1 along with Harmy and a few others have literally saved this classic from the willful destruction through neglect Lucas has imposed on it. I'm so happy there is a version of the theatrical release available to those of us that saw the movie back in '77 but don't have the laserdisc and certainly don't care for the Lucas-ized crap fest. Of course, I may be looking through the lens of nostalgia and just didn't notice it.

I have the 4K77 1080p DNR version and I didn't think the higher resolution made it any worse for me. However, it isn't as "despecialized" as Harmy's version is, but I believe that the worst of the Special Edition changes have been removed from it. I haven't seen it, but I suspect it's the most detailed (and most scrubbed) version yet. Have you seen that one? There's also a version called "D+77," which is primarily sourced from the new 4K releases from Disney on their "Disney+" streaming service. Speaking of DNR, if you like that sort of thing, there's a DNR version of the 4K77 which has drastically different color grading than the standard no-DNR release.

I had Harmy's Despecialized Edition at one point but I don't like it as well as a scan of a 35mm theatrical film print, because it's not the real thing (it's a not 100% accurate re-creation of the theatrical cut), plus, because it's primarily sourced from the official Blu-ray, it's too scrubbed/DNR'd for my taste. It comes down to personal preference of course. The 4K77 is sharper and has more detail than the SSE.

I like the SSE's colors better than the standard 4K77's colors (though versions of the 4K77 with different color grading are out there so some of them might have better color, or anyone is free to come up with their own LUT to make the colors look however they want in any version), and it's true that the SSE has more cropping than the 4K77. Note the little lines in the doorway that you can see in the 4K77 that aren't there at all in the official Blu-ray. And yes, 4K77 has more detail than the SSE, and even more detail than the official Blu-ray (upon which the Despecialized Edition is based) in some cases. SSE causes eye fatigue for me because of how "soft" the image is (which makes it seem slightly out of focus), while 4K77 doesn't bother my eyes at all. Also, it's not just "barely sharper," than the SSE, it is significantly sharper. It's barely sharper, colored worse AND crops in the image a little too much! whats up with that"ĤK77 is the best one out there. He's using elements of 4K77 to create his Despecialized Edition version 3.0. Note that Harmy, the creator of the Despecialized Editions, prefers the Silver Screen Edition to his own creation, and prefers 4K77 to the Silver Screen Edition. Version 3.0 is supposed to be 1080p, but it hasn't been released yet. "ima hunting down the 1080 version of the DESP now."
